How to Burn a Yankee Candle Properly- How To Stop Tunneling

By  |

I was devastated when my first ever Yankee candle began to burn away without its sides. I couldn’t understand why it was happening. Surely they shouldn’t do that?

I would sit and poke the wax downwards until it looked really ugly and I would be frightened to light it again in case it wasted more of the candle!

I have inserted some old photos of my Yankee candle for you to see what happened when mine started tunneling.

It’s super frustrating when this happens and if left alone you get left with a jar with the sides full of wax and no wick to burn the remaining candle with!

1 # The first thing I recommend is to keep your candle away from drafts, just to promote a healthy burn.

2 # The next thing to stop tunneling, something I did not do, is trim your candles wick. On average allow your candle to burn for four hours before letting the wick cool and beginning to trim. Candles should burn one hour for every 1 inch in diameter of the actual candle size. Trim the wick using a wick trimer to 1/8 of inch before re-lighting, this ensures the candle will burn equally and prevent tunneling.

3# If your candle has already started to create a tunnel, you can try pushing the wax down, slowly just be extremely careful not to go anywhere near or cover the wick!

4# The great thing about Yankee candles in particular is that they rarely ever stop smelling. So, if all hope is lost for your candle, remove the excess wax from around the jar and place it in to an oil burner or wax tart burner to still enjoy the scent of your candle.

5# You could purchase some candle wicks and make your own candle by melting down the wax and pouring it carefully into somewhere you want to put your candle (like a small jar!)

6# This one is an actual tip for the yankee candle website:

“To minimize wax left on the sides of the jar, burn 3 hours at a time; it is normal for some wax to be left. The amount will vary per color, fragrance and burning conditions”
