Make Up Brush Guide 101-

By  |

It took me years and years to finally understand what every single brush did. I was using eye shadow brushes to apply a smokey eyeliner effect and sticking my lipstick brush in to my gel eyeliner to line my eyes. Yes, I was that bad.

However don’t worry I’m not a complete idiot anymore and I know exactly where to dip and blend my brushes. I’ve created this make up brush guide to help you out. The basics you need in your make up bag to create your favorite looks. ta dah!

Before We Begin

With make up brushes you should try and stay away from the extremely cheap ones. I don’t agree ever that the most expensive is ever the best but, try and avoid really cheap and stay mid range. If you buy too cheap, such as a dollar for 3 foundation brushes, the hair will fall out, they will eat your foundation and just won’t do a good job.

‘The Blushing Blush Brush’

Blush Brushes in my very well used opinion aren’t just for blusher. Companies and some make up artists will tell you that you need a brush of every shape and colour to be as brilliant as them. The truth is, you don’t. If you’re like me and just love to create your own looks then trust me you only need a handful of brushes to create flawless looks.

A blusher brush has a round head and in the most articulate way possible my perfect description of them is ‘They are spread out and loose’.

‘The Small But Mighty – Foundation Brush’

I personally don’t use a foundation brush, not because I can do anything crazy without it i’m just too lazy to clean it everyday. That and I prefer a much more full coverage and foundation brushes seem to steal some of my product. However, if you are like the majority of the world a foundation brush is the way to go.

They provide a smooth application and can gt in to all the nooks and crannies our fingers can’t.

‘Powder me like one of your french girls!’

This Brush is for people who use loose powder to set their foundation in place. I wouldn’t recommend using your blusher brush for this as the bristles are different and it does actually create a different look. You want the product evenly ‘sprinkled’ on your face not spread around like a blusher brushes bristles can do, get it?

‘Conceal, conceal, conceal’

If you apply concealer predominantly under your eyes, a concealer brush is worth the investment. All it does is help your concealer look more natural and blend more naturally with your foundation and skin color.

This brush is ‘small and flat and in a way looks a bit wet’, you’re very welcome for my fabulous descriptions.

In other words, a stippling brush. It is used to create an airbrushed finish to your face. The brush lets you build on what you have already done by letting you choose the coverage and finish. The brush is specially angled to really push the make up in to your skin to create such flawless finishes.

It can also be used to apply setting powder.
